Seasons 1-4 campaigns promote the anthology series. As a senior designer in season 1, I oversaw the process of the HBO.com series page. Using unit photography, I managed and mentored junior designers through the image production process. Cutting various aspect ratios in Photoshop, abiding by our image cropping guidelines and nomenclature, the suite of images was uploaded and tagged in the content management systems.

Collaborating with the internal creative services and the editorial team, I created animated title cards from concept to delivery. In seasons 2-4, the design challenge was to make the 2-shot interview videos of the show-runners in extra content pieces more visually interesting. The solution was annotating visual cues based on what was said in the video. Inspired by neon motel signage, we identified moments in the video that lent to the illustrated style. Video Copilot’s Saber plugin, used in Adobe After Effects, helped streamline the animation of the illustrations. Lower thirds graphics packages were created and delivered to the internal GFX team to add to all produced videos.

My role and responsibilities expanded over the 4 seasons to Art Director. Overseeing, mentoring, and managing the designated team to meet request deadlines.

Process

  • Collaboratively identify milestones and timeline in phases with the internal editorial, marketing, production, and creative services teams aligning on videos living on YouTube, Facebook and HBO.com platforms.

    Each season a motion designer and a static designer were paired to evolve the upcoming season’s look and feel. Often inpsired by finalized show Key Art final and pre-air episode review.

    Utilizing project management software Asana and Monday.com, the internal team tracking of assets from concept to delivery.

  • Weekly check-in meetings to HBO.com series landing page requests. Reviewed components of extra content videos. The team would discuss moments in the video where visual annotation would add to the video’s intrigue.

  • Aligned workflow and responsibilities between team members, which included video editing, designing interstitial full-screen takeover cards, and custom animated illustrations.

  • Extra content videos were reviewed.

  • Successfully garnered buy-in from key stakeholders. Created a suite of assets meeting the tone of the show while grounding in the HBO brand. A successful cross-department collaboration evolved of the course of 4 seasons.
